Statement of Intent:

Inspiring young people through arts, culture and creativity is an important part of life at Alvaston Infant and Nursery School. We strive to create and sustain a rich learning environment, where every child is inspired and challenged to create, perform, explore and discover so that they are empowered to be the best they can be. Art and Design is embedded across our curriculum, allowing children to build on knowledge and skills and extend learning across all subjects. Promoting a curiosity about Art and Design supports children’s understanding of culture, both their own nation and that of others, alongside historic artists and landmarks.  Celebrating our identities and developing our own views, whilst being respectful of differing opinions is also a significant aspect of learning at Alvaston Infant and Nursery School.

Why do we teach Art and Design?

Art, craft and design embody the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education will engage, inspire and challenge pupils to create their own pieces of work. Providing them with the knowledge and skills they will need to be experimental and inventive learners. Over time they will develop a greater understandning of the subject(s), recognising how art, craft and design reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

What will I be learning about?

You will be:

  • Producing a range of creative work by exploring your own ideas and recording your experiences

  • Learning how to draw, paint and sculpt using many different art, craft and design techniques

  • Evaluating and analysing creative works using the language of art, craft and design

  • Learning about great artists, craft makers and designers, and the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
